my son elliott

Maybe I cursed her with the name.

To me, Elliott looks like a feminine baby girl, but to the general public, she is almost always considered a boy (and that's before any names are mentioned.) The kicker is, it matters not one bit what she is wearing. I swear, I'll have her dressed in pink flowers and someone inevitably will tell me what a cute baby boy she is. I mean come on, context clues, people! And when anyone does ask for a name? Unless it's firmly established that she's a girl, I answer with "Ellie." Otherwise, I feel like just confirming her status as boy.

Last weekend in Austin, I made the mistake of dressing Ellie in a dark blue shirt. Granted, the shirt was frilly and she had pink bunnies on her shoes, but did that make any difference? Within 10 minutes, two groups of people had commented on what an adorable boy she was. The boy greetings - "Hello, little guy!" - just kept coming.

I don't really get upset about it, but I am finding myself increasingly annoyed with each boy comment. I try not to let it show and usually just make a lame joke about "he" being a "she," but what can I say? It's just getting a bit old.

I took a photo of her yesterday when she really did look like a boy. I find it fitting to post it here:

My son Elliott (4/21)

On a slightly related note, I met my first baby girl Elliott yesterday at storytime! The two of us moms were so proud of ourselves for being "cutting edge." Ha!

  1. I have seen so many pictures and videos and the real thing of Elliott, and so far I have only seen maybe one picture where she might be mistaken for a boy. In real life, not even close. She does NOT look like a boy in the least. Her beautiful eyes scream GIRL. Those people are slightly dumb I'm afraid to say.
